QUESTIONNAIRE ABOUT POLAND

1. What is the name of your city ?
Michałowo.
2. Do you live in a town or in a city ?
Michałowo is a small town, most of us live in Michałowo or in nearby villages

3. How many inhabitants are there in your town ?
About 3,500.

4. Is it an old town ?
Michałowo was founded in the 18^th century and in 1832 a country gentleman Seweryn Michałowski bought it.  From the beginning it was kind of industrial small town producing textiles. Before the First and Second World War in Michałowo lived Germans, Jews, Poles and Belarussians (old photos - michalowo.anwoj.org/pl/historia.html).  The oldest buildings in Michałowo are:  Wooden orthodox church – 160 years old, catholic church – 100 years old, our school which is 60 years old and was built close to a place were a protestant church was before the war.  There is also an old Jewish cemetery 2 km from Michałowo, and ruins of a Manor House 7 km from Michałowo in Hieronimowo and there are some old orthodox churches or their ruins in the area.  Also 40 km from here there are two towns where Polish Tartars have lived since 17^th century - Bohoniki and Kruszyniany. A big city which is close to Michalowo is Bialystok with the beautiful Branicki Palace.

Yes, it’s a white eagle on red background

6. How is the flag in your country ?
It’s two horizontal stripes: white and red.

7. Do you have a king, a queen or a president ?
We’ve got a president – right now it’s “fresh new” president – only a month on his post – Lech Kaczyński

8. What climate is it ? Do you live by the sea ?
The climate is mild, but lately we had quite hot summers and quite cold winters.  The area we live is one of the coldest in our country with even minus 30 degrees Celsius in the coldest years in history.  We have sea in the north - 800 km from our place and mountains in the south with a beautiful ancient capital of – Cracow (Kraków).

9. How many national holidays do you have ?
We have Constitution Day – 3^rd May and Independence Day – 11^th November.

10. What is the typical dish of your country ?
It’s “bigos” – cooked sauerkraut with sausages and mushrooms, “gołąki” cooked cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and ground meat, “schabowy” pork chop dipped in eggs and bread crumbs and fried and for Christmas Eve supper – carp in jelly
